Associate Conductor - Steve Sykes
From his first contest in the National Finals at the Royal Albert Hall in 1971 at the age of thirteen Steve Sykes has been involved in brass banding at it’s highest level. It can truly be said that in this genre he began a new wave of musicality and technical virtuosity in tuba playing and revolutionised the instrument as a solo voice in the brass band.
Steve has adjudicated at high ranking contest such as The National Finals of Great Britain, The British Open Championships and Spring Festival, Brass in Concert Championship, The Scottish Open, The Welsh Open, The Irish Championships, The English Nationals, The Cambridge Masters International, The Butlins Mineworkers Championships, The National Finals of North America, The Austrian Nationals, The National Finals of the Netherlands, The Belgian Finals, The World Music Contest (Kerkrade) and the National Finals of Sweden. He is one of the Brass Band movement’s most experienced adjudicators.
Musical Director - Steve Sykes Apart from being one of the UK’s most popular and entertaining brass soloists he also has a successful conducting career and has directed bands in all major competitions including the British Open, National and European Championships. He has many commercial recordings to his name and is a regular broadcaster and conductor on the concert platform.
Away from his performing schedule Steve was a visiting instrumental professor at HM Royal Marines Band (tutoring all brass instruments) and has been tuba tutor to the National Youth Band of Great Britain, Wales, Switzerland and Sweden. He is low brass tutor at Bristol University and Taunton School.
